Description
Developed in consultation with specialist skills, breakdown and International coach, Richie Gray, Gilbert have developed a range of specialist training equipment to target the tackle and breakdown skills.
The Multi-Skills Tackle Bag has been developed to be used in a variety of ways - centered around tackle technique, tackle jackal, breakdown and clean out and turnover technique.
Coaching Tips:
Low Tackle and Mid Tackle: Speed of approach, eyes on the target and set height, hip sink, foot in close, same foot same shoulder, initial shoulder contact, arm wrap and grip, chase the feet, complete the tackle.
Mid Tackle: Speed of approach, eyes on the target and set height, hip sink, foot in close, same foot same shoulder, initial shoulder contact, arm wrap and grip, chase the feet, complete the tackle.
Chest Tackle Ball & All: Speed of approach, eyes on the target, hip sink, foot in close, same foot same shoulder, initial shoulder contact and lock in ball, arm wrap and grip, chase the feet, complete the tackle
Double Team Tackle: Working as a tackle team 1st and 2nd player, speed of approach, eyes on the target, hip sink, foot in close, same foot same shoulder, initial shoulder contact, arm wrap and grip, chase the feet, hips together, complete the tackle.
Single or Double Jackal: As above for key tackle points… chase feet get into a strong position over the ball, hands onto ball and hold or pull ball up onto chest, feet shoulder width apart and sink into a strong position, stay square, hips down, flat back showing no angles and head tucked back into shoulders, head in a neutral position, eyes looking over for potential threats. Can also be executed in pairs - the second player then joins the jackler to create a strong bind shoulder to shoulder to protect the jackal and to form a strong holding formation.
Single Jackal & Clean: As above but instead of holding in the jackal position for the steal, go past the ball and attack through the tackle to affect opposition clean out accuracy.
Single or Double Clean Out Accuracy: Use angle on the Multi-Skills Bag to create a target to clean out, drop height from approx. 3m from bag, sink hips, eyes always on target, come through the gate and make accurate shoulder and grip contact with the bag (black arms on bag are the grip-target), follow through from low to high with strong leg drive and finish on your feet or strong holding position. Can also be executed in pairs.
Shoulder Battle: Use secondary angle on Multi-Skills Bag to create a target that gives you an edge to place your shoulder under and get underneath, drop height from approx. 3m from bag, sink hips, eyes always on target, come through the gate and make accurate shoulder contact with the underside of the angle on the bag, follow through from low to high with strong leg drive and finish on your feet or strong holding position
Shoulder Battle and Jackal Technique: as above shoulder battle - come through the gate, accurate shoulder contact with the underside of the angle on the bag, follow through from low to high and get hands to ball either to hold or get ball onto chest.
Tackle & Walk: Speed of approach, eyes on target and set height, hip sink, foot in close, same foot same shoulder, initial shoulder contact, arm wrap and grip, chase the feet, complete the tackle first then in a secondary movement crawl out over the top of Multi-Skills Bag keeping hands off the grass, and using the black arms on the side of the bag to work along, stay low and finish in strong holding position on end of bag.
Kick Contestable Turnover Technique: multiple different sequences within this action. Basic technique is for two players to attack the bag. The bag can be placed on the ground or can be thrown up into the air by the coach. Player 1 – Speed of approach, eyes on target and set height, hip sink, foot in close, same foot same shoulder, initial shoulder contact, arm wrap and grip, chase the feet, complete the tackle. Player 2 – As above for key tackle points then… chase your feet, get into a strong position over ball, hands onto ball and hold or pull ball up onto chest, feet shoulder width apart and sink into a strong position, stay square, hips down, flat back showing no angles and head tucked back into shoulders, head in a neutral position, eyes looking over for potential threats. Tackler 1 can recycle themselves into support for stealer.
